PRESENTATION
Graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials represent one of the priority areas of the Horizon 2020 program of the European Commission, as shown by the 'Graphene flagship'. Due to the exceptional mechanical and electronic properties of graphene, research about this material has been at the forefront of this area during the last years. However, since graphene is not a semiconductor, its electronic applications are limited. For that reason, other 2D systems like boron nitride, transition metal oxides, transition metal dichalcogenides, layered hydroxides, layered pnictogens or layered coordination compounds have dramatically expanded the field with properties ranging from insulators to superconductors, from metallic to non-metallic, and from diamagnetic to ferromagnetic. The research community exploring graphene and other 2D materials is increasing considerably and researchers form different disciplines such chemistry, physics, materials science, and electronic engineering are actively involved. Moreover, there is a big interest in deciphering the chemistry and physics of these 2D materials as well as in the development of functional devices and novel applications.
During the 2D-Chem Valencia-Erlangen Symposium discussion and collaboration among participant researchers will be promoted, in order to face the huge scientific challenges encountered in this field, both from an experimental and theoretical point of view.
The Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) host probably the largest and most productive pioneering community in Europe or even worldwide at the forefront of carbon allotrope research. Erlangen is the only place, where all fields of carbon research – the chemistry, the physics, and the materials engineering of graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, and of new synthetic carbon allotropes – are represented. This work was carried out under the framework of an Erlangen Collaborative Research Center, namely, the SFB 953 “Synthetic carbon allotropes”. Moreover, the experience gained in this field has been extremely valuable for the exploration of other 2D materials like black phosphorus, which are much less investigated, approaching the desired goal of creating new materials for high-performance applications.
The University of Valencia (UVEG) host the Institute for Molecular Science (ICMol), an excellence unit founded in 2000 to develop a competitive and high-quality research in materials science using a molecular approach. ICMol is in fact the sole Spanish research center exclusively focused on the study of molecules and functional molecular materials exhibiting magnetic, electrical or optical properties. It produces most of the high impact research papers of the UVEG (first university in chemical research and fifth in physics among Spanish Universities according to the “Nature index”) in Chemistry and it is recognised internationally as one of the pioneering centres for the research on molecular nanoscience and, more specifically, on molecular magnetism and 2D materials.
To celebrate and strengthen existing collaborations between Erlangen and Valencia, we will host the first “2D-Chem Valencia-Erlangen Symposium on the Chemistry and Physics of 2D Materials”. While the primary objective of the symposium is to build bridges between research groups from Valencia and Erlangen, we have invited several renowned speakers from other institutions in order to foster discussion and collaborations in this exciting field of research.
2D-Chem 2019 Symposium talks will deal with:
- General properties of 2D materials.
- Isolation of 2D materials.
- Chemical functionalization of 2D materials.
- Development of heterostructures and hybrid 2D materials.
- Structural, mechanical and optical characterization of 2D materials.
- Electronic band structure, theoretical model of transport in 2D crystals.
- New chemical and physical properties of 2D materials.
- Applications of 2D materials in energy storage and conversion, optoelectronics, flexible electronics, catalysis, spintronics, etc.
PROGRAMME
The Symposium will be structured in three different blocks:
Keynote lectures (ca. 30 min + 15 min discussion).
The following keynote speakers have confirmed their attendance:
Specialized lectures (ca. 15 min + 10 min discussion): In this part, short tutorial lectures showing some relevant scientific advances in the above topics will be presented by selected invited speakers.
The following invited speakers are attending the symposium:
José Jaime Baldoví MPI Germany-Universitat de València.
Salvador Cardona Universitat de València.
Frank Hauke University Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Kathrin Knirsch University Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Antonio Leyva-Pérez Instituto de Tecnología Química. UPV-CSIC.
Samuel Mañas Universitat de València.
Enrique Ortí Universitat de València.
Juan José Palacios Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
Oral communications (ca. 8 min + 2 min discussion): With the aim of encouraging discussion and communication among all the participants, the students and postdocs will have the opportunity to present short communications about their research results, including those that, although incomplete, can promote debate.
Posters will be displayed during the full conference duration (from the 12
th to the 14
th). They will be removed on Thuesday 14
th before 16:30h. Authors must be present during the poster sessions. Posters will be displayed on freestanding boards. The boards will accommodate posters up to A0 size (841mm x 1189mm) in portrait format.
Two poster prizes sponsored by
Specialized Group on Nanoscience and Molecular Materials of the Spanish Royal Societies of Chemistry and Physics will be given to the best poster presentations.
