The Institute of Molecular Science of the Universitat de València congratulates Matteco, a spin-off born at ICMol, on receiving the award for Best Innovative Chemical Company/Startup at the Avelino Corma Awards.
This recognition highlights the impact of cutting-edge science and its capacity to become real innovation, with applications aimed at major global challenges such as green hydrogen and decarbonisation.
During the award ceremony, Gonzalo Abellán Sáez, co-founder and CEO of Matteco, underlined the importance of determination in turning scientific advances into real-world solutions. “Innovation requires more than technology: it requires will,” said Abellán, who defined Matteco as “a group of people with purpose”, highlighting the role of the team in the company’s evolution from its early stages in the academic environment to its current international projection.
In this regard, Abellán also emphasised the project’s journey from fundamental research to global impact: “It has been a journey from the most basic science to being able to say that today our developments are present on practically every continent.” He added: “We will try to make our catalysts be everywhere to help create a better world.”
ICMol extends its special congratulations to Gonzalo Abellán Sáez, as well as to the entire Matteco team, for this achievement and for continuing to demonstrate how research developed in Valencia can generate solutions with international reach.
Matteco continues to establish itself as an example of knowledge transfer, deep tech entrepreneurship and innovation in advanced materials. Its trajectory reflects the value of connecting scientific research with the productive sector to promote technologies capable of contributing to a more sustainable energy model.
The Institute of Molecular Science of the Universitat de València also congratulates the organisers of the Avelino Corma Awards and all the awardees in this edition.
