Gonzalo Abellan, leader of the 2D-Chem research group at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol), Associate Professor at the Universitat de València, and distinguished researcher (GenT), celebrates a new milestone in his career by securing his second ERC Proof of Concept (PoC). This prestigious recognition supports the Roll-E project (Self-Supported Electrodes via Roll-to-Roll Manufacturing Using Non-Critical Materials for Green Hydrogen Production), aimed at revolutionizing green hydrogen production through innovative mass manufacturing technologies.
In addition to his role as a researcher, Gonzalo is co-founder and CTO of Matteco. This new achievement further establishes his position as an international leader in the field of advanced materials and sustainability.
A technological solution to drive green hydrogen forward
Green hydrogen, a key component in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Europe, currently represents only 4% of the global hydrogen production due to the high costs and limited performance of existing technologies. The Roll-E project addresses these challenges by developing mass-produced self-supported anodes for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), a promising yet still maturing technology.
Roll-E's innovative approach focuses on utilizing roll-to-roll continuous coating techniques, enabling the production of catalytic layers more efficiently and at larger scales. These technologies not only reduce production costs and enhance electrolyser performance but also bring this technology closer to industrial market adoption.
From lab to market
The awarding of this ERC PoC highlights the importance of the work conducted at ICMol in the transition to a more sustainable economy, showcasing the impact of fundamental research in addressing global challenges.
International recognition for ICMol
This accomplishment by Gonzalo Abellan not only underscores the excellence of his career but also strengthens ICMols position as a reference center for advanced research. At the institute, we congratulate Gonzalo and his team on this outstanding success and wish them the best in the execution of Roll-E, a project that promises to set a new benchmark in green hydrogen production.
