Background
José J. Baldoví is a Distinguished Researcher of Excellence GenT and leads the 2D Smart Materials Lab at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) of the University of Valencia. His research group focuses in the development of efficient theoretical and computational frameworks for the design and modelling of emerging advanced materials from first principles. His interdisciplinary work integrates physics, chemistry and materials science to address challenges in magnonics, spintronics, quantum computing, catalysis and sensing devices. His team is currently formed by 3 postdocs, 7 PhD and 2 MSc students, from 7 different nationalities.
He has published over 96 scientific articles (33 of them since 2024), ~94% in Q1 journals, ~51% as first/corresponding author, 4418 citations, h index = 35, more than 70 invited presentations (including Plenary/Keynote) and seminars. The quality of his research is evidenced by the increasing number of publications in high impact journals (Adv. Mater. (x4), Nature Phys., Nano Lett. (x4), Nature Commun. (x6), Phys. Rev. Lett., JACS (x2), Angew. Chem.) and citations (>660 in 2025), highlighting 14 journal covers and a growing global network of collaborators.
Baldoví has secured over €3M in competitive funding as PI, including a prestigious ERC Starting Grant, as well as national (Proyecto Generación de Conocimiento; Juan de la Cierva Incorporación (2nd in Chemistry panel)) and Valencian grants such as the CIDEGENT and CDEIGENT (1st and 2nd between all panels, respectively). He was Marie Curie Sklodowska Fellow (2017) at Max Planck Institute MPSD (Germany) and has also secured 2 Marie Sklodowska Curie IFs as a supervisor. In 2009 graduated in Chemistry, completing a Master (2012) and a PhD in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (2016) in the UVEG, all of them with extraordinary award. His PhD thesis, based on the design and understanding of the physics of molecular nanomagnets, achieved the highest score between all the PhD theses in Chemistry of the UVEG.
His leadership and independence have been widely recognized: Panel Member of the ERC StG (2026), finalist in the prestigious TED Fellowship (2026), Young Researcher ‘Group Leader’ Award of the RSEQ (2025), Emerging Scientific Talent Award of the SCQ (2025), Full member of the Young Academy of Spain (2024), 9 d’Octubre of Xàtiva Award (2024), Rotary Club Xàtiva Award (2023), Science-Technology ‘City of Algemesí’ Award (2022). He is also warrant of the ‘María de Maeztu’ Excellence Unit and coordinator of the 2D materials strategic line at ICMol, Elected President of the Scientists of Excellence of the GenT Programme Society (AccenT), representative of Spain in the management committee in the COST Action SuperQumap. He also holds a Master in Science Communication, mastering the art of communicating complex scientific ideas to wider audiences ('El País con tu Futuro', ‘GenTalks’ or ‘Cátedra Europa’).
