The researcher at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol), located in the scientific-academic area of the Science Park of the University of Valencia, has been part of the jury along with four Nobel Prize winners in the category of New Technologies, in which the biologist Luis Serrano has been recognised.
The distinguished researcher of the Gen-T Plan José Jaime Baldoví, director of the 2D Smart Materials group at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol), located in the Science Park of the University of Valencia (PCUV), has formed part of the jury of the prestigious Rei Jaume I awards in the category of New Technologies in its 36th edition, whose meeting took place in Valencia on 3 and 4 June.
Together with Baldoví, four Nobel Prize winners participated as members of the jury, professors Sheldon Lee Glashow, president of the Jury (Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979 for his contributions to the theory of the unified electromagnetic and weak interaction between elementary particles), Bernard Feringa (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2016 for the design and synthesis of molecular machines), Morten Meldal (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2022 for the genesis and development of click chemistry) and Richard Roberts (Nobel Prize in Medicine 1993 for the discovery of split genes). Also on the jury were Elvira Fortunato, who was Minister of Science, Technology and Education in the Portuguese Government until last March, as well as leading scientists and scientists from the scientific community.

He podido interactuar con científicos y empresarios de amplio reconocimiento a nivel mundial, entre los que se encontraban veinte Premios Nobel. Me ha encantado poder contrastar juicios críticos con ellos y todos quedamos impresionados por la alta calidad de las candidaturas. He podido compartir dos días enteros con tantas personas que admiro, así como nuestra gran pasión por la ciencia, en lugares llenos de identidad como los que nos ofrece València. Ha sido una experiencia inolvidable, muy gratificante, conocer de primera mano a personas que son referentes para mi actividad diaria. He podido aprender de su experiencia, intercambiar ideas y compartir la curiosidad por el mundo que nos rodea", explica Baldoví.
New Technologies Award, a cornerstone of AI in biomedicine
The winner of this year's award was ICREA professor Luis Serrano, who received unanimous votes from the entire jury. Serrano connects fundamental research and technological development with his contributions in systems biology, synthetic biology and protein design, achieving a great impact on society.
The researcher has been one of the first scientists to use artificial intelligence (AI) by creating the FoldX programme for predicting protein structures, used by the international community and which has become one of the cornerstones of AI in biomedical research and innovation.
35 años con el conocimiento y el emprendimiento
Los Premios Rei Jaume I fueron instaurados en 1989 con el propósito de promover la investigación en España, reconociendo a destacados científicos y emprendedores que hayan realizado su labor en el país. En concreto, se distribuyen en siete categorías que se evalúan de forma independiente: Investigación Básica, Investigación Biomédica, Investigación Clínica y Salud Pública, Protección del Medio Ambiente, Nuevas Tecnologías, Economía y Emprendedor.
Cada premio incluye una medalla de oro, un diploma y 100.000 euros, con el requisito de destinar parte de esta suma a la investigación o al emprendimiento en España. Los jurados de los Premios Rei Jaime I están compuestos por alrededor de 100 personalidades de renombre en los ámbitos de la ciencia y la empresa a nivel mundial. En esta edición, han participado veinte premios Nobel y, desde su inicio, más de 70 premios Nobel han formado parte de los jurados.
