This research group aims to synthetize iron molecular materials, which have the potential to be used in electronic technology. Information storage in the contemporary society relies on an inherent property of the matter, electronic bi-stability. It is the ability of atoms and molecules to switch between different electronic states when interacting with their environment. This language is a binary coding (0-1). In this context, the spin crossover phenomenon exhibited by the iron coordination compounds is one of the best examples of molecular electronic bi-stability. The changes of colour and/or other physical properties of iron molecules or polymers can be exploited for storage and display information using the binary coding. Iron molecular switches are addressable by a thermal, mechanical or optical input.
The forefront research activities of the group are focused essentially on:
