We investigate structural and dynamical aspects of biomembranes. Some topics we have addressed are the transport mechanism of molecules across membranes by membrane proteins, or the permeabilization mechanism of membranes by membrane active peptides. More recently we have expanded our interest to the membrane insertion mechanism of different membrane peptides, some of them models of membrane proteins and others with antimicrobial/antitumoral biological activity. We modify these membrane peptides to make them responsive to light or to pH, with the goal of having external control of their membrane insertion, membrane orientation and/or their activity. To obtain structural and dynamical information we use a combination of electronic and vibrational spectroscopies (UV-vis, CD, fluorescence, Raman and IR), both static and time-resolved (from ns to minutes), which we complement with fluorescence microscopy and classical molecular dynamic simulations.
